MIXTAPE MONDAYS by MOARRR 058
– exclusive mix by Phil RetroSpector –
This week’s exclusive MOARRR mix was made by the king of melancholy himself. Phil RetroSpector is known for his beautifully twisted and heartbreaking mashups, remixes and videos. But this week, right here and right now, he shows us his DANCEY AND ELECTRONIC side!!! Wooowwwz and yayyyyyyyyzzzz! Don’t forget you heard it on MOARRR first!
MOARRR: This mix is kinda different than your famous trademark melancholic vibe, why, how, tell us more about it!
PHIL RETROSPECTOR: I’ve got this reputation as a reclusive figure that mixes emotions rather than beats, which is cool …. apart from when you’re stuck behind a set of decks in a sweaty club, then it’s all about creating an energy with the crowd and feeding off it. Hence this mix is a lot more up-tempo than people might expect, unless they’ve seen me DJ. It’s eclectic in nature, twisting back and forth between sh*t to strut to and melodic electronica.
MOARRR: What’s the future for Phil RetroSpector?, New releases?
PHIL RETROSPECTOR: There’s a bit of re-invention going on at the moment. It’s not about going back to the drawing board and starting from scratch, but trying to extract signature elements like emotion and melody and apply it to something a little less shoegaze… I suppose it’s all about striking the happy medium between DJ’ing and remixing. I’m currently working on a couple of remixes and promising myself that I’ll put out an EP of original music before the end of the year.
MOARRR: How do you see the current situation of the mashup scene?
PHIL RETROSPECTOR: If I’m honest, I’ve not been very active on the scene for the past eight months or so. Part of that is down to work, but most of it is down to the fact that the scene has become a little jaded at the moment and could do with a bit of serious reinvention. Don’t get me wrong, there are a core group of guys out there who are ridiculously creative in their approach to cuttin’ sh*t up and I’m lucky enough to call most of them friends. Unfortunately, they’re dwarfed by a horde of tone-deaf people trapped in their own taste.
MOARRR: What do you do besides of music?
For the most part I write for film & television with my writing partner. It’s pretty all consuming with equal measures of reward and frustration. I’m also working on a book of short stories about lost souls in the West of Ireland.
MOARRR: What is going on in Ireland now? Please recommend few art, cultural, music things for MOARRR readers who are visiting the island in these days.
PHIL RETROSPECTOR: Ireland is a an awesome place to visit, especially if you like to party…. and nobody parties like the Irish. Drop Everything in May, Forbidden Fruit and Body & Soul in June, Galway Arts Festival in July and Electric Picnic in September are all worth a look.
MOARRR: Where can people see you?
PHIL RETROSPECTOR: You can catch me monthly @ Mashole in the Roisin Dubh, Galway. Apart from that, there’s a couple of audio-visual sets at festivals sets this summer.
